John Metzen        ABSTRACT STEEL SCULPTURE

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Over the years I have developed a strong interest in abstract steel sculpture.  We purchased a number of pieces from a local artist and at that point I knew I had to become more involved.

As I developed a stronger relationship with two sculptors in particular, I could feel the sense of purpose and excitement building.  As I mentioned in my artists statement, my background in antiques and folk art, with its many wonderful forms and surfaces, was the perfect background for my own work.  It gave me a good "feel" for the process.  The unending flow of creative ideas and inspirations was exhilirating.

With the support of some very good friends and other artists we were encouraged to organize a show, in which 45 sculptures were displayed, and was thrilled to sell 1/3 of the show that night.  The next big step for me was submitting several sculptures to the area artists curated exhibit at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY.  Soon my work was being purchased at the gallery and found its way into some very important collections, both locally and nationally.

I have learned to enjoy the pieces while I have them, but to also let them go to other equally enthusiastic patrons for their own collections.
